Canby, Oregon
1st term apprentice at JATC Operating Engineers Local 701Christopher Ball, from Canby, Oregon, is a First Term crane operator apprentice working towards journeyman status in the Operating Engineers Local 701. He is currently employed by NessCampbell Crane + Rigging for his apprenticeship. In addition to his work, Christopher also serves in the Oregon National Guard as an Infantryman. He has received the top gunner title from his military unit and was a top cadet in his military school. One of Christopher's primary goals is to establish himself within the industry and create opportunities for personal and professional growth while also making a meaningful impact on shaping communities through his work.

Elisha Buege
Scholarship Award: $5,000
Gig Harbor, Washington
2nd term apprentice at JATC Operating Engineers Local 302Elisha Buege of Gig Harbor, Washington, is a second term crane operator apprentice working toward journeyman status at the Operating Engineers Local 302 and working for NessCampbell Crane + Rigging. A Career goal of Elisha’s is to become a project manager. Before jumping to that next step, she plans to gain all the field experience and knowledge she can. In addition to this, she wants to use her scholarship to help attain industry certifications such as a Commercial Drivers License (CDL). Some of her passions include going to the gym and spending time outdoors. She expressed that she is grateful for this scholarship opportunity and the support of all the sponsors.

Jordan Carroll
Scholarship Award: $5,000
Woodland, Washington
1st term apprentice at JATC Operating Engineers Local 701Jordan Carroll of Woodland, Washington, is a First Term crane operator apprentice working towards journeyman status in the Operating Engineers Local 701. He is a United States Veteran decorated with a Joint Meritorious Unit Award, Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Inherent Resolve Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and Sea Service Deployment Ribbon. Jordan was a section leader in the Marines, and after returning from service, he discovered a passion for cranes, which he never thought he’d have an interest in. He wants to become a journeyman crane operator and then become a foreman as he enjoys working with a team and putting his leadership skills to use. Eventually, he plans to become a field representative for his union in order to stand up for his union brothers and sisters, providing them with a voice when needed. Upon receiving the scholarship, Jordan stated, “This scholarship also gives me the opportunity to meet other individuals and possibly find opportunities within the construction and engineering field. Also being able to find more training opportunities.”

Jacob Cornelison
Scholarship Award: $5,000
Ridgefield, Washington
4th Term Apprentice inside wireman at NIETC IBEW Local 48Jacob Cornelison of Ridgefield, Washington, is a 4th term inside wireman apprentice working towards journeyman status at NIETC IBEW Local 48. Jacob is currently working for Nexus Electrical Group. In Jacob’s words, his path to becoming an electrical apprentice was not the typical path; he has received two college degrees, graduating from Washington State University with a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and from Concordia University with a Master of Arts in Teaching. With this background he plans to not only make an impact as a skilled electrical worker but to eventually jump back into the classroom as a mentor teaching future electricians at the NIETC-IBEW training center. On receiving this scholarship, Jacob is thankful for the expansion of his personal and professional network. He is excited to establish new connections and explore any new career pathways that are presented to him. He stated, “I would jump at any opportunity that would help my progress in becoming a well-rounded electrician and instructor, and I believe this scholarship gives me the best opportunity to do that.”

Sean Crotty

Vancouver, Washington JATC
4th term apprentice at JATC Operating Engineers Local 701
United States VeteranSean Crotty of Vancouver, Washington, is a 4th term crane operator apprentice working towards journeyman status in the Operating Engineers Local 701. Sean is a United States Veteran decorated with an Army Commendation medal, Army Achievement Medal 2nd award, Military Outstanding Volunteer Service medal, Presidential Unit Citation Navy/Marines, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service medal. He also enjoys volunteering at the Klineine Kids Fishing Derby, PUD Team Tree Planting, and Soul River, which is a veteran to teen mentorship program. Sean is currently enjoying his apprenticeship, especially working on projects that involve drilling and ground improvement engineering. On receiving the scholarship, Sean says, “The Schweiger scholarship would not only be a personal triumph but also a beacon of hope for my family… and I am eager to contribute to the Schweiger legacy.”

Flora "Susee" Davis
Scholarship Award: $7,500
Warm Springs, Oregon
3rd term apprentice at Pacific Northwest Carpenters Institute (PNCI)Flora “Susee” Davis of Warm Springs, Oregon, is a 3rd term pile driver apprentice studying at Pacific NW Carpenters Institute (PNCI). She works at Advanced American Construction and is a proud two-time scholarship recipient, she stated. “The Schweiger Scholarship fund has motivated me in ways that allow me to be a better mom, apprentice, co-worker, daughter, friend, partner, but most importantly, an inspiration to my family and others that anything is possible.” She aims to work hard in her apprenticeship to reach journeyman status while picking up as many useful skills as she can.

Luke Davis
Scholarship Award: $5,000
Bend, Oregon
Freshman at Oregon State UniversityLuke Davis of Bend, Oregon, will be entering his first year at Oregon State University and will be studying both Economics and Civil Engineering. Throughout High School, he took a multitude of STEM-focused courses, which led to his interest in engineering. When asked to express how he felt about the scholarship, Luke said, “One of the major parts of this scholarship that is so important to me is the value of the community. Through my research of this scholarship, I have seen that this scholarship fund offers a very supportive community beyond the internships and financial aid.” Some of Luke’s hobbies include track, cross country, soccer, and Nordic skiing. He is an active member of student government at his high school, where he helps organize community service opportunities and assemblies.

Kellen Hartford
Scholarship Award: $15,000
Wilsonville, Oregon
Junior at the University of ArizonaKellen Hartford of Wilsonville, Oregon, is entering his Junior year at the University of Arizona, pursuing a degree in Civil Engineering. He is a two-time scholarship recipient, and this summer he plans to intern with Perlo Construction again after having such a fantastic experience last summer. After his experience, he stated, “Thanks to my summer at Perlo, I learned that culture and hard work can be infectious toward those around you when done the right way.” Perlo even gave him an employee spotlight award for his hard work and the positive lasting impression on their organization. In addition, the University of Arizona awarded him the Excellence Award for academic merit. Kellen aspires to become a project manager and then a director. He is grateful for all the experiences he has received from this scholarship, expressing he would one day like to hold a place on the Schweiger selection committee, along with stating, “The principles for which this scholarship, in honor of Forrest Schweiger and Konrad, are a true reflection of my core values.”

Michael Hiller
Scholarship Award: $7,500
Saint Paul, Oregon
Sophomore at Oregon State UniversityMichael Hiller of St. Paul, Oregon, is entering his sophomore year at Oregon State University and pursuing a degree in Construction Engineering Management. This summer, he has an internship with Hoffman Construction, assisting with a project in Salem, Oregon. His roots come from agriculture, but he is excited to follow his newfound passion for construction management. Michael has a strong sense of community and assists his father with fundraising events on their farm for various volunteer organizations around town, such as the Saint Paul Jaycees, FFA, and Parish. He also volunteers at the Saint Paul Rodeo and is a member of Alpha Gamma Rho at Oregon State University. Michael stated, “The Schweiger Memorial Scholarship represents an invaluable opportunity to advance my career and alleviate the financial strain of college life. I am sincerely grateful to Kyle Izatt for recommending this scholarship, as well to the Schweiger Memorial Scholarship Fund for supporting this scholarship opportunity.”

Austin Johnson
Scholarship Award: $5,000
Silverton, Oregon
2nd term apprentice at JATC Operating Engineers Local 701Austin Johnson of Silverton, Oregon, is a second-term crane operator apprentice working towards Journeyman status in the Operating Engineers Local 701 program. You could say he has performed a hat trick, as he is a three-time scholarship recipient and currently works for Advanced American Construction. One of Austin’s goals is to become a journeyman crane operator. Joesph Ploium, a crane instructor at OETC 701 had this to say about Austin, “It is not just Austin’s technical skills that impress me, Austin is a joy to have in class because of his amazingly positive attitude and leadership skills…Austin volunteered to assist many of the other students by giving pointers and sound advice.” It is evident that Austin is on his way to becoming a valuable addition to the construction industry. Regarding the scholarship, he expressed, “The Schweiger Memorial Scholarship has touched my heart. Working for Advanced American Construction, I have been able to see the legacy the Schweiger family has left not only in our company but also in our industry. I am honored to apply for this scholarship.”

Ryker Kitchen
Scholarship Award: $5,000
Brush Prairie, Washington
Freshman at Oregon State UniversityRyker Kitchen, a recent High School graduate from Brush Prairie, Washington, plans to attend Oregon State University in the fall to study Civil Engineering. His goal is to enjoy a fulfilling career and positively impact the industry and community. To prepare for his studies, Ryker has already taken an Introduction to Engineering class and other advanced math and science courses. Although he's uncertain about his engineering specialization, he believes the scholarship will help him establish connections in the industry and provide a better understanding of construction and engineering. Ryker has performed well academically, being on the school honor roll for five out of seven completed semesters, and excelled in basketball, serving as team captain and receiving all-league honors during his senior year. In his free time, he volunteers at youth basketball camps and helps coach his younger brother's team.

Damon Knapp

1st term apprentice at JATC Operating Engineers Local 701Damon Knapp, a dedicated member of IUOE Local 701 from Kelso, Washington, is a First Term crane operator apprentice working at Advanced American Construction. This is not his first time being an apprentice as he has already completed the Labor’s apprenticeship. His passion for learning and diverse range of hobbies are the driving forces behind his ambition. Upon receiving this scholarship, Damon expressed, “Beyond the tangible benefits of receiving this scholarship, it would instill a sense of responsibility and gratitude, further fueling my passion to give back to this wonderful community and industry. This scholarship represents more than just financial aid; it symbolizes an opportunity for hope.” In his free time, Damon enjoys reading, rock hunting, and going to the gym.

Brenden Mills

1st term apprentice at JATC Operating Engineers Local 701
United States VeteranBrendon Mills of Saint Helens, Oregon, is a First Term crane operator apprentice working towards journeyman status in the Operating Engineers Local 701. He looks forward to achieving his goals within this apprenticeship and becoming a tower crane operator. Brendan served in the Marines and is a United States Veteran decorated with a National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, and Certificate of Commendation. He also participated in Strongman competitions and took 2nd place at his first novice competition in December 2023. As an apprentice, Brendon enjoys practicing his craft and aims to become an instructor in the future. He is grateful for the scholarship opportunity and the connections with industry professionals it has provided.

Senior at Oregon State UniversityMacy Montgomery of Beaverton, Oregon, is entering her final year at Oregon State University, aiming to complete her degree in Construction Engineering Management. She is a two-time scholarship recipient and has a strong passion for the community and hard work. This is shown by her involvement in the St.Paul Rodeo, mentoring underclassmen engineering students, and pursuing internships. She interned last summer with Perlo Construction and plans to intern this summer with Fortis Construction. Macy expressed, “Beyond the academic benefits, the Schweiger Memorial Scholarship has also greatly impacted my professional development. The support I have received from Advanced American Construction and the many wonderful donors and supporters of the fund have boosted my confidence within the construction industry. This assurance of support has empowered me to actively seek out learning opportunities and professional growth.”

Kelly Strobeck

Newberg, Oregon
Junior year at the University of NevadaKelly Strowbeck of Newberg, Oregon, is entering her Junior year at the University of Nevada. She is pursuing a degree in Architecture and is a proud two-time scholarship recipient. She has been placed on the University of Las Vegas Honor’s College Academic Dean’s List for all three years of college thus far (2022, 2023, and 2024) and expressed, “My goals to become an architect extend beyond mere design; I aspire to have a deep understanding and connection with the construction industry”. Not only is she a stellar academic but also a hard worker, last year she interned with Ness Campell Crane + Rigging, gaining invaluable hands-on experience. This summer, she will be interning with Perlo Construction. When asked about the Schweiger scholarship, Kelly stated, “Being a recipient of the Schweiger Memorial Scholarship has opened doors to relationship-building within the construction industry. Building relationships with professionals in the field has provided me with invaluable guidance and support as I navigate my academic and professional journey.”

Henry Thoma

Vancouver, Washington
Freshman at Clark Community CollegeHenry Thoma is from Vancouver, Washington, and is a recent High School graduate who will be starting his education at Clark Community College, studying Construction Engineering Management. He then plans to transfer to Oregon State University to finish his education. Henry participates in a variety of sports but has a passion for Disk Golf and has competed at a few Junior World Championships. Henry’s passion for the construction industry is influenced by his father, who works as a project manager at Tapani, Inc. When learning more about the scholarship, Henry reflected, “I am a non-believer in searching for handouts because I know I must earn my place to succeed, But I believe that with the money from this fund, I could make the fund founders and even Forrest proud, wherever he has found peace. By upholding the legacy of the construction industry and this fund through hard work and dedication.”

Caiden Zagala

1st Term apprentice at JATC Operating Engineers Local 701 programCaiden Zagala of Molalla, Oregon, is a First Term Heavy Duty Repairer (HDR) apprentice in the Operating Engineers Local 701 program. He currently works at Advanced American Construction. Caiden said, “Having the chance to work within the trades at 19 has been my dream. I’m aware that being so young means that I have a considerable number of skills that need to be worked and improved,” this knowledge pushes his willingness to learn and grow within the industry to become the best mechanic he can. Caiden was able to attend our scholarship event last year which fueled his desire to apply, he expressed, “From that moment, I wanted to be a part of something as big as this; Especially after looking into the history of why this scholarship continues today. I promised myself I would be on that stage next year.” We are proud to say you have fulfilled that promise to yourself and look forward to seeing you on stage.
